This study is presented in a “Question-and-Answer” format to simplify the analysis and explanation of the numerous intriguing prophecies and impressive visions in the two principal texts of Revelation, plus other related New Testament texts.
How really practical and relevant are these prophecies about the 144,000 for those of us living in the 21st century—both for followers of Jesus Christ of all kinds and for the masses of humanity who do not embrace the teachings and world vision of Master Teacher of Nazareth?
“And I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on the mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty and four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads.”
Logically, they should be of supreme interest to ALL JEWS today, for, potentially, a large number of them may very well be the subject of them! If Jews today would only read these prophecies, intelligently and objectively, with understanding, they would see the 144,000 as God sees them within the scenarios of the END TIMES of the material universe. “One hundred and forty-four thousand” Israelites sealed for eternal salvation, glory, and honor!
That number, symbolical rather than literal.
As for me, being a citizen of the spiritual “kingdom not of this world,” where there is “neither Jew nor Gentile” (John 18:36; Galatians 3:28), I am profoundly interested in what Jehovah God projects for the Hebrews, all of them, the 144,000 and all the rest, and what is possible for them to achieve regarding their destiny as spiritual beings, among all the rest of us human beings who are, as they are, the “offspring of God.” Acts 17:24-29
Personally, in every detail of the two visions concerning the 144,000, I acquire knowledge and see lessons—whether explicit or implicit—that are instructive and valuable for my understanding and spiritual life. For example, one of the most striking aspects of these revelations is their marvelous harmony with other visions and prophecies of Revelation, as well as with other relevant biblical texts. I find no contradictions—a crucial fact that inspires confidence in Revelation as the book it claims to be: “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show unto his servants, even the things which must shortly come to pass: and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John.” Revelation 1:1
I also see, and greatly appreciate, that the only “living and true God” (1 Thessalonians 1:9; Jeremiah 10:10), who gives “to all life, and breath, and all things; and he made of one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth” (Paul to the Athenians, in Acts 17:25-26), most certainly loves the Jews across all the times of their existence, even to the very end, as he does all peoples, from the Orient, to Europe, to the entire Western Hemisphere. John 3:16
Indeed, he “would have all MEN (generic for all humans) to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the TRUTH.” 1 Timothy 2:4. And, of course, the “ALL” includes the Israelites, wherever they are on the planet. Therefore, it may be truly said that ALL religious and political fanatics and lunatics who cruelly persecute, torture, and murder JEWS wherever and whenever they live, will, themselves, suffer the bitter, eternal “SECOND DEATH,” from which there will never be reprieve or escape. Revelation 20:14; 21:8.
This also goes for the like-minded who do the same to Christians or the constituents of any other religion on the face of the Earth. It is axiomatic that true followers of the true God of Life, Love, and Mercy do not persecute, torture, or murder their fellow human beings. They do not twist and misapply any statement of the Sacred Scriptures in the demonic attempt to justify vile, evil, bloody actions such as those of the infamous, satanic “Holy (SADISTICALLY UNHOLY) Inquisition” of the perverted Roman Catholic hierarchy. “You shall NOT MURDER anyone… NOT KILL.” Matthew 5:21. “HOLY WARS,” being of a carnal, physical, material nature, are as opposed to the true God the Father, the Son Jesus Christ, and their glorious, spiritual “GOSPEL of PEACE” (Ephesians 6:15), as darkness is to light, as idiocy is to common sense.
Some of the subjects studied in this document.
A. How and when the 144,000 were sealed. They are sealed during the time covered by the Sixth Seal, which reveals events scheduled for the "little while" preceding the Second Coming of Christ.
B. Circumstances and traits that identify them.
1. They belong to the twelve tribes of Israel.
2. They stand on Mount Zion with the Lamb, bearing the name of the Lamb and that of the heavenly Father on their foreheads.
3. Before the throne and in the presence of the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders, they sing a new song that no one else can learn.
4. "They did not defile themselves with women, for they are virgins."
5. "They follow the Lamb wherever he goes."
6. "They were redeemed from among mankind as the firstfruits for God and for the Lamb."
7. "No lie was found in their mouths, for they are blameless before the throne of God."
C. Galatians 6:12–16, a relevant text that includes the name “ISRAEL of GOD,” is carefully analyzed.
D. Romans 2:28-29 corroborates the identification of the 144,000 Israelites sealed. A key phrase is: “He is a Jew who is one inwardly.”
The FIRST VISION on the SEALING of 144,000 JEWS.
Revelation 7:1-8
They are SEALED on planet EARTH.
In the unfolding of this vision, the references to the “four corners of the earth,” “the four winds of the earth,” “the sea,” “the sun,” and “the trees” decisively place the people of Israel on planet EARTH at the time when the 144,000 from among them are sealed. Secular, political, and religious leaders.
“After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that no wind should blow on the earth, or on the sea, or upon any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascend from the sunrising, having the SEAL of the living God: and he cried with a great voice to the four angels to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we shall have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads. 4 And I heard the number of them that were sealed, a hundred and forty and four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel:
5 Of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Reuben, twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand;
6 Of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand;
7 Of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand;
8 Of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.”
QUESTIONS and ANSWERS
1. From what people or nation do the 144,000 sealed ones come?
Answer. “From all the tribes of the children of Israel.” Revelation 7:4. The 144,000 come from the nation of Israel, and certainly not from the Gentiles.
2. How many tribes united to form that nation?
Answer. Twelve.
3. How many are sealed from each tribe?
Answer. Twelve thousand.
4. Is this number “twelve thousand” literal or symbolic? I understand it to be symbolic for the following reasons:
a) The earthly tribes of Israel did not each consist of exactly the same number of members; some tribes had more members than others. Numbers 1:1-46
(1) It is logical to assume that this disparity persisted throughout Israel’s history up to the fulfillment of the vision of the 144,000.
(2) Consequently, regarding the “sealed”—a synonym for the “saved”—an exact figure of twelve thousand sealed from each tribe would not be equitable, as twelve thousand would be sealed from the smallest tribe just as from the largest. I am convinced that God is equitable, not arbitrary, in distributing his saving grace. There is “no respect of persons with him.” Romans 2:11; 1 Peter 1:17
b) Various “numbers” appear in the visions of Revelation, and their contexts demonstrate that they are symbolic. For example, twenty-four elders, four living creatures, five months, one thousand two hundred forty days, half an hour, one
thousand years, etc. Surely, “twelve thousand” would be no exception.
5. Is the number “one hundred forty-four thousand” literal or symbolic?
